WEEKLY uPDATES:
We started our spelling words this week. Words Their Way means the same thing as spelling words. Their spelling words will be the Words Their Way cards that are sent home with them and then a few more. To check for understanding the spelling rule, there will be 2 or 3 words that have the same rule that will not be Words Their Way words.
CLARIFICATION: This is not the first year we are doing a standards based report card. Remember that all first grade students should be meeting or exceeding the standard by the end of the year. Your child is still learning the crucial skills to be successful in first grade, as this is still the beginning of the year. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

*Starting next week, on any graded paper I will be putting report card grades on your child's paper. This is so you can begin to understand how the new standards based report card is completed. Here are what each number means:
1- Begins standard- The student was exposed to the standard, yet still cannot master it without assistance.
2- Approaches standard- The student is making progress, but not making enough gains to complete skill independently.
3- Meets standard- The student understands the skill or concepts and proves to apply it independently.
4- Exceeds standards- The student frequently shows that they know the skill or concept and goes deeper with the standard without prompting.
x- That means the standard was not assessed during this quarter.
*I am also starting dictation sentences this week that comes right after the spelling tests on Fridays. What are dictation sentences? Good question! It's the child's ability to properly write down a sentence that is verbally said. I'm going to be looking for a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, "finger" spaces in between the words and a puncuation mark at the end. There is usually one spelling word in the sentence that I expect them to spell correctly. However, I am not grading spelling on every word because we haven't learned many words yet. If you have any questions just ask.
